Suica vs JR Pass (2026): Which One Do You Actually Need in Japan?

Suica vs JR Pass (2026): Which One Do You Actually Need in Japan?

Almost every visitor needs a Suica or another IC card; only some need a JR Pass. They do different jobs. An IC card is a prepaid tap card for subways, local trains, buses, vending machines and convenience stores everywhere in Japan. The Japan Rail Pass is a fixed-price ticket for unlimited JR travel, and since 1 October 2026 the 7-day ordinary pass costs ¥53,000. It only pays off if you ride roughly three or more long Shinkansen legs within the week. On the classic Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka route, individual tickets come to about ¥35,000 to ¥38,000, so the pass loses money.

The Short Answer

Your trip What to get
One city (Tokyo only, Osaka only) IC card only
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, 7 to 10 days IC card plus individual Shinkansen tickets
Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and back within 7 days Price it: the pass starts to compete
Long-distance zigzags (Tohoku, Kyushu, Hokkaido) within 7, 14 or 21 days JR Pass plus an IC card for city travel

You will want an IC card either way: the JR Pass does not cover subways (Tokyo Metro, Toei, Osaka Metro) or most private railways.

Japan Rail Pass Prices from 1 October 2026

Pass Adult Child (6 to 11)
Ordinary 7-day ¥53,000 ¥27,000
Ordinary 14-day ¥84,000 ¥42,000
Ordinary 21-day ¥105,000 ¥53,000
Green Car 7-day ¥74,000 ¥37,000
Green Car 14-day ¥116,000 ¥58,000
Green Car 21-day ¥147,000 ¥74,000

Prices before the increase were ¥50,000, ¥80,000 and ¥100,000 for the ordinary passes. JNTO notes that the official JR Pass website is offering the old prices for a limited time, so check there before buying from an agent.

The pass covers the Hikari and Kodama Shinkansen. The fastest Nozomi and Mizuho trains need a supplement for each ride: ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto.

The Break-Even Maths

A typical Golden Route basket in individual tickets:

  • Tokyo to Kyoto, Nozomi reserved seat: ¥14,170
  • Kyoto to Osaka: about ¥580
  • Shin-Osaka back to Tokyo: ¥14,720
  • Narita Express: about ¥3,070 each way

That is roughly ¥35,000 to ¥38,000, well under ¥53,000 for the pass. Add a Hiroshima round trip or a run north to Sendai or Kanazawa inside the same 7 days and the numbers move closer; price your exact legs before buying.

Which IC Card? Suica, PASMO, ICOCA and Welcome Suica

All major IC cards work on each other's networks across Japan's big cities, so the brand matters less than the format.

Option Deposit Valid for Refund of balance Good for
Suica, PASMO or ICOCA (physical card) ¥500, refundable 10 years from last use Yes, at a ticket office, minus a ¥220 fee Longer or repeat visits
Welcome Suica (physical card for visitors) None 28 days No Short trips
Welcome Suica Mobile (iPhone app) None 180 days from issue No iPhone users; top up with a card in Apple Pay
Suica in Apple Wallet None Same as a regular Suica Possible, with conditions iPhone users who visit Japan often

Physical Suica and PASMO cards went back on sale on 1 March 2025 after the chip shortage. Most Android phones bought outside Japan cannot run a mobile Suica, so Android users should buy a physical card.

How to Use Both on One Trip

  1. Get an IC card on arrival (or in your phone before you fly) and load ¥3,000 to ¥5,000.
  2. Tap in and out for every subway, local train and bus. Top up at station machines or convenience stores.
  3. For long legs, buy individual Shinkansen tickets at a JR ticket machine or online, or activate your JR Pass if your route earns it.
  4. Before you leave, spend the balance at a convenience store, or refund a physical card if the balance is large.

FAQ

Do I need a JR Pass for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka? Usually not. Individual tickets for that route cost about ¥35,000 to ¥38,000, against ¥53,000 for a 7-day pass since 1 October 2026.

Can I use Suica in Kyoto and Osaka? Yes. Suica, PASMO and ICOCA work on each other's networks in all major cities, including Kyoto and Osaka.

Can I ride the Nozomi with a JR Pass? Yes, with a supplement for each ride, for example ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto. Hikari and Kodama trains need no supplement.

How much is the JR Pass in 2026? The 7-day ordinary pass is ¥53,000 for adults since 1 October 2026, up from ¥50,000. The 14-day pass is ¥84,000 and the 21-day pass ¥105,000.
